Discovering the Best Budget-Friendly Accommodation in Perth, UK

Find Hotels . Travel Resources

My recent trip to Perth, a charming city in Scotland, offered an unexpected surprise—an affordable yet comfortable hotel that ticked all the boxes for a perfect stay. If you’re planning a visit to this lovely part of the UK and need a place that offers great value for your money, this blog post will walk you through my personal experience, including where I stayed, what the hotel had to offer, and how I booked it.

1. The Hotel: Salutation Hotel

After exploring various options for accommodation, I settled on the Salutation Hotel. Located in the heart of Perth, it’s an old, character-filled property that perfectly blends history with modern comfort. Built in 1699, it’s one of Scotland’s oldest hotels, and that historical charm really stood out during my stay. Despite its age, the hotel had recently undergone some renovations, making it both cozy and well-equipped. What I loved most about Salutation Hotel was its prime location, situated right in the city center, making it an ideal base for exploring Perth and nearby attractions.

Location: A Central Gem

The hotel’s central location is perfect for anyone wanting to explore Perth without the need for long commutes. It’s within walking distance to many of the city’s attractions, including Perth Theatre, Perth Museum and Art Gallery, and the stunning South Inch Park. You’ll find plenty of shops, cafes, and restaurants nearby as well, meaning you won’t need to travel far to experience the local culture. For anyone arriving by train, the Perth Railway Station is only about a 10-minute walk from the hotel, which makes it incredibly convenient for travelers.

Pricing and Booking Details

The price of my stay at Salutation Hotel was surprisingly reasonable, especially for the location and quality. I stayed for four nights in a standard double room, and the total cost came to around £330 for the entire stay. When you break it down, that’s just £82.50 per night, which is pretty good for a hotel in the heart of a city like Perth.

I booked my room through Booking.com, which is a platform I often use for hotel bookings. I’ve always found it easy to compare prices and read detailed reviews from other guests, so it’s become my go-to platform for travel accommodations. Booking was straightforward, and I was able to secure the room with no hidden fees, which is always a bonus. I also took advantage of their free cancellation policy, just in case my travel plans changed last minute.

2. The Room: Comfortable and Cozy

The room I stayed in was a standard double, which was more than enough for my needs. It wasn’t the largest room, but it had a very homey feel with all the essentials. The bed was comfortable, and I appreciated the soft linens and fluffy pillows, which made for a restful night’s sleep after a day of sightseeing.

The room also had all the necessary amenities, including a flat-screen TV, free Wi-Fi (a must for any traveler), and a kettle with tea and coffee supplies. What I found particularly useful was the en-suite bathroom, which was clean and well-maintained. It featured a modern shower, complimentary toiletries, and a hairdryer—everything you could need for a short stay. It wasn’t luxurious, but it was practical and functional, and that’s what mattered to me.

For those who prefer a bit more space or luxury, the hotel also offers a variety of room types, including family rooms and suites. But honestly, if you’re just looking for a simple, budget-friendly option, the standard double room definitely does the trick.

3. Hotel Facilities and Services

While the room itself was comfortable, the hotel had some additional features that added to the overall value. For example, the Salutation Hotel offers an on-site restaurant and bar, which was very convenient. I didn’t want to venture too far after a long day, so I decided to have dinner at the hotel one evening. The restaurant served traditional Scottish dishes, and I had the pleasure of trying a delicious plate of haggis, neeps, and tatties—a local delicacy. The food was hearty and filling, and the atmosphere in the dining room was cozy and welcoming.

In addition to the restaurant, the hotel also has a lounge area where guests can relax, and there’s a 24-hour front desk for any assistance. If you’re planning to explore the area, the hotel can also help you with booking tours and provide information on local attractions.

4. Nearby Attractions

Perth is a beautiful city with a rich history, and staying at the Salutation Hotel gave me the perfect opportunity to explore its top attractions. Here are a few highlights of the city that you might want to check out:

Perth Museum and Art Gallery

Located just a short walk from the hotel, the Perth Museum and Art Gallery is a must-visit if you’re interested in history and art. It houses a fascinating collection of artifacts, including some significant pieces of Scottish history, as well as rotating art exhibitions. The best part? Admission is free!

Scone Palace

One of Perth’s most famous landmarks, Scone Palace is located just outside the city and is a great spot for a day trip. Known as the crowning place of Scottish kings, it has stunning grounds, beautiful gardens, and a rich history that makes it a unique visit. You can easily reach it by bus or taxi from the city center.

South Inch Park

If you want to unwind and enjoy some fresh air, head to South Inch Park, which is just a short walk from the hotel. It’s a beautiful green space where you can go for a walk, have a picnic, or simply relax. The park offers views of the surrounding mountains and is a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

5. Transportation: Easy Access and Convenience

As I mentioned earlier, the Perth Railway Station is just a short walk from the Salutation Hotel, making it super convenient if you’re arriving by train. The station is well-connected, with regular services to Edinburgh, Glasgow, and other major cities in Scotland.

If you’re traveling by car, the hotel provides on-site parking for a small daily fee, which is great if you have a rental car or are driving in. Parking in the city center can be tricky, but the hotel’s parking lot is a lifesaver.

6. A Few Things to Keep in Mind

While I had a great experience overall, there were a few small things to note. First, the hotel is an old building, and as charming as it is, you can occasionally hear the creaks of the floorboards or the hum of the plumbing. It’s not a major issue, but if you’re sensitive to noise, you might want to consider bringing earplugs.

Also, the Wi-Fi connection, while generally good, can occasionally be a bit spotty in certain areas of the hotel. This wasn’t a huge issue for me, as I was mostly using the internet in my room, but it’s something to keep in mind if you need a strong, uninterrupted connection.

Finally, while the hotel’s restaurant is convenient, if you’re in the mood to explore the local food scene, there are plenty of great restaurants and cafes around the city, all within walking distance from the hotel. I recommend checking out The Bothy for some excellent Scottish cuisine or grabbing a coffee at Café Kisa.

7. Why I Recommend Salutation Hotel

If you’re planning a trip to Perth, I wholeheartedly recommend the Salutation Hotel for its combination of comfort, location, and affordability. It offers excellent value for the price, and while it may not be the most luxurious option, it certainly meets all the requirements of a quality stay. Whether you’re in Perth for a short weekend getaway or a longer stay, this hotel provides a reliable and welcoming place to rest after a day of exploring.
