Birmingham’s Food Scene: Top Restaurants You Can’t Miss
FoodBirmingham, a bustling city in the heart of England, has so much to offer when it comes to food. From Michelin-starred fine dining to vibrant street food markets, the city’s culinary scene is a rich tapestry of flavors, cultures, and culinary innovation. During my trip to Birmingham, I had the chance to explore some of its top restaurants and experience firsthand the passion and creativity that define this city’s approach to food. Here’s a detailed look at some of the best spots I encountered, and a few that I couldn’t resist adding to my “must-try next time” list.
1. Opheem – Modern Indian Excellence
I had heard amazing things about Opheem, a Michelin-starred restaurant that brings a modern, avant-garde twist to Indian cuisine, and it certainly lived up to the hype. Located on Summer Row, Opheem is the brainchild of chef Aktar Islam, who’s redefined what Indian fine dining can be.
The interior was elegant yet inviting, with a beautiful open kitchen that allows you to watch the chefs at work. I opted for the tasting menu, a journey through complex flavors and meticulously crafted dishes. One standout was the goosnargh chicken tikka with smoked yogurt and tamarind. The flavors were bold, with spices that danced on my palate, but the presentation was restrained and artful. Another unforgettable dish was the lamb korma. Unlike the creamy kormas I’d had in the past, this one had a depth and richness that was perfectly balanced with subtle spices.
Opheem isn’t just a restaurant; it’s an experience. The staff was attentive, guiding me through each dish and sharing the inspiration behind it. It was clear that each ingredient had been chosen with care, making for a truly memorable dining experience.
2. The Wilderness – Bold and Imaginative British Cuisine
Next on my list was The Wilderness, an intimate and quirky spot in the Jewellery Quarter that focuses on innovative British cuisine. As soon as I walked in, I was struck by the restaurant’s moody ambiance—black walls, dim lighting, and eclectic art made it feel almost like stepping into another world.
The Wilderness is known for its tasting menus, and I decided to go all in. One of the first courses was a smoked eel with caviar—the flavors were intense but beautifully balanced, with a hint of smokiness that paired perfectly with the richness of the eel. Another highlight was the aged beef tartare served with mushroom ketchup and crispy onions. It was comforting and familiar, yet full of surprises.
The Wilderness is a feast for the senses, both in terms of flavors and presentation. The dishes were unexpected and playful, and I found myself eagerly anticipating each course. The staff was knowledgeable, explaining the story behind each creation, which made the meal feel even more special.
3. Adam’s – Michelin-Starred Elegance
Adam’s is one of Birmingham’s most well-regarded restaurants, known for its elegant, contemporary approach to British cuisine. Located on Waterloo Street, Adam’s is sophisticated but unpretentious, making it perfect for both special occasions and casual indulgences.
I began my meal with the Devon crab with apple, coriander, and a hint of curry. The freshness of the crab paired beautifully with the subtle spice, creating a dish that was light yet packed with flavor. For my main course, I chose the cornish turbot, served with artichoke, smoked eel, and a delicate truffle sauce. The fish was cooked to perfection, flaky and tender, with the truffle sauce adding a luxurious touch.
Adam’s is a culinary gem in Birmingham. The atmosphere was serene, the service was impeccable, and every dish felt like a work of art. I left with a newfound appreciation for British cuisine and a firm resolution to return.
4. Digbeth Dining Club – A Street Food Extravaganza
For a completely different vibe, I headed to Digbeth Dining Club, a lively street food market that’s become a staple of Birmingham’s food scene. It’s held in the historic Digbeth area, known for its vibrant arts scene, and the atmosphere is electric.
As I wandered through the stalls, I was spoiled for choice. I decided to start with Original Patty Men for one of their famous burgers. I opted for the “Alabama Slammer,” which came with a fried chicken patty, melted cheese, and a tangy Alabama sauce. It was indulgent and delicious, exactly what I was hoping for in a street food burger.
Next, I tried Buddha Belly, a stall offering authentic Thai street food. The pad Thai was aromatic and full of flavor, with a perfect balance of sweet, salty, and spicy notes. I finished with a visit to Baked in Brick for their wood-fired pizza. The crust was thin and crispy, topped with fresh ingredients that took it to the next level.
Digbeth Dining Club is a must-visit for food lovers. The variety is incredible, the flavors are bold, and it’s a great way to experience Birmingham’s food scene in a fun, relaxed setting.
5. Carters of Moseley – Innovative and Seasonal British Fare
Though I didn’t have the chance to visit Carters of Moseley on this trip, it’s at the top of my list for next time. This Michelin-starred restaurant, led by chef Brad Carter, is known for its commitment to locally-sourced ingredients and seasonally-driven menu.
Dishes at Carters are minimalist and creative, with a focus on letting the natural flavors of each ingredient shine. The Norfolk chicken with elderflower and salted turnip has received rave reviews, as has the Devonshire duck. Carters is also celebrated for its wine pairings, with a sommelier on hand to help guests find the perfect match for their meal.
6. Tropea – Italian Flavors with a Modern Twist
Another spot I’m eager to try is Tropea, a relatively new Italian restaurant in Birmingham that’s quickly gaining a reputation for its fresh, modern take on classic Italian dishes. Located in Harborne, Tropea offers a cozy, inviting atmosphere and a menu filled with seasonal ingredients.
Signature dishes include the porchetta with sage and garlic and the homemade tagliatelle with truffle and parmesan. Tropea has been praised for its attention to detail and authentic flavors, and I can’t wait to sample their pasta and house-made desserts.
Birmingham’s food scene is a wonderful reflection of the city itself—diverse, innovative, and full of surprises. From high-end dining experiences to casual street food, there’s something here for every palate and every occasion. As I made my way through these incredible restaurants, I found myself falling more in love with Birmingham, one delicious bite at a time.
